Teaching and Guidance by renowned Scholars
Starting by summer term, 2002, a Graduate Programme in Quantitative Economics has been established at our Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Social Sciences, together with the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences.
The programme aims at training students for leading positions in banks and companies, as well as in the political sector, and for academic careers. It offers a full set of courses in core areas of economics and neighbouring disciplines, meeting international standards. The degree is designed to be completed in 3 years of full-time study and research.
Students are guided to their own Ph. D. research via a succession of general courses in the first semester and more specialised courses in the second semester. By the end of the first year, students should have found a distinct focus for their Ph. D. research together with two main supervisors whose research interests cover the area of the proposed dissertation project. Concentration on this project within the following two-year period and close contact to the respective supervisors should allow completing the Ph. D. within a total of three years on average. In addition to our own versed staff of senior scholars, a part of the program will be conducted by leading visiting professors.
A major asset is the link between the Department of Economics and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the leading institute in applied and policy-oriented economic research in Germany. A staff of some 100 active full-time researchers contributes to a stimulating academic environment. The institute holds the German National Library for Economics which is the World's largest library for economic literature with more than 2,6 million volumes. Its President, Prof. Dennis J. Snower, Ph. D., as Professor of Economic Theory plays an active part in the education of the Ph. D. students in our Graduate Programme. In addition, other staff members from the Institute may also give lectures and hold seminars, and an internship at the Institute of World Economics may be included in the first year of the program.
Language
The language of instruction is English in all courses, and, as a rule, the Ph. D. thesis will also be written in English (German students may write the thesis in their native language). Although no knowledge of German is required for participation in the programme, free German courses are also available on a voluntary basis, compatible to the schedules of the course program
Thesis
Topics of Ph. D. research may be in any area covered by the research interests of the Faculty of the Graduate Programme. The particular strengths of our Department of Economics lie in the fields ofinternational economics, financial economics, econometrics, applied microeconomics, and decision theory. The programme also emphasises interdisciplinary work through its associated faculty members from the Department of Business Administration, Department of Mathematics and Department of Theoretical Physics.
Fees & Scholarships
Due to general state funding of university studies in Germany, there are no tuition fees for participants in the programme. In exceptional cases, partial scholarships contributing to the living expenses may be granted, although only for a very limited number of participants. Therefore, interested applicants are encouraged also to apply to other institutions for financial support.

Requirements
Application is open to students of all nationalities who hold a degree in economics. Application may also be accepted from graduates with degrees in fields like business administration, social sciences, mathematics, engineering, or physics. About ten applicants will be accepted for entering the programme each winter term starting by October.

Applying for financial support
Fees and Scholarships
Due to general state funding of university studies in Germany, there are no tuition fees for participants of this programme. We will also take care of all necessary equipment (e.g. office space, computing facilities) for successful pursuit of the doctoral research. Beyond it, there is the possibility of funding the living expenses. The program itself, however, so far holds only limited funding facilities, available in exceptional cases.

Note, that application terms widely differ from institution to institution, and that for most grants you will have to apply well in advance.
Information about the structure of the programme
In applying for funding, it may be helpful to explain the special structure of our programme. Most of the listed foundations are German foundations, which pose certain criteria for granting their funds. These criteria may not be formally compatible with the programme so far, as none of the students in the first year is able to name a supervisor and a topic, which is required at some foundations.
